About Thekkady

Thekkady is a small but beautiful destination in the Idukki district of Kerala, India. Set at an altitude of around 900 metres in the Western Ghats, it is best known as the gateway to the Periyar Tiger Reserve and as one of India’s most important spice-growing regions. The nearest town, Kumily, sits just 4 kilometres away and serves as the base for most travellers.

Why Thekkady is famous

Thekkady is famous for three things — its tiger reserve, its spice plantations, and its scenic mountain setting. Periyar Tiger Reserve is one of India’s oldest protected forests and the only sanctuary in Kerala where you can spot wild elephants from a boat. The surrounding hills are blanketed in cardamom, pepper and clove estates that supply spices across the world.
